Our first spun yarn from Global Gardens Flax

As we prepare the ground for this year’s flax season, we’re also getting back to processing last year’s retted and dried crop.

JOIN IN: Wednesday 13th March we’ll start preparing land at St Fagan’s museum, between 2-4pm. Meeting at the main entrance or at the field… bring a drink and gloves 😊

Good preparation makes a good crop, and we need more hands. You get to have your own seeds, a bundle of flax to or some yarn to play with!

Lots more to ripple and ret!

We’ve recently been gifted a good amount of lovely long dried flax from the Tymhorau project in Machynlleth, that’ll need rippling, retting and processing too. A small amount of its seed has been cleaned and a seed germination test of 25 is underway.

But, the main aim of this fourth year of flaxing is to get spinning and weaving and making with this amazing fibre! So here’s my first real try of spinning our beautiful, golden, tank retted flax, grown at Global Gardens in 2021.

The drop spindles have been made for us by Goodshed, a local woodworking community group. The darning mushroom it’s wound on to store is hand turned welsh ash.

Finger knitted to make the most basic textile with this mother of all fibres.
