The seeds are being sown… here in Cardiff, Wales, for community made linen. Artist cat lewis started growing flax for linen at Global Gardens Project in 2021, as part of the Making n Mending Club that she facilitates.

2024 will be our fourth year of growing, and it’s getting bigger each year. We have previous years’ crops stored in various states of processing, so that we can share the whole process at community sessions, with this year being our big spinning year!

We aim to plant in a few locations around Wales, with other community groups and individuals joining in to grow and process flax to linen.

We’re on the way to making our linen yarn, but it’s a long, slow and wonderful process. You can join in by picking up your own packet of our saved St Fagan’s flax seed, available at Making n Mending Club sessions, seed shares around Cardiff or from Waterloo Tea cafe on Whitchurch Road in April.

There’s seed in the packs for 1m square. Follow the instructions and tag us #Llieinwe. There’ll be community flax processing and spin sessions later in the year, so you can go all the way from seed to yarn.
