This year at St Fagan’s Museum we moved to a new garden. Abernodwydd house garden was beautifully prepared by the garden team at the museum.

We had our own saved seed and new seed from Flaxlands.
We planted in sun in April, then had some rain, more sun and warm weather. It’s grown to over 120cm tall and we pulled 2/3 after around 90 days. This will be left standing for a week to ripen seed before rippling and field retting.

Some of the crop lodged a few weeks ago – this has lost its seed and is partially retted from lying on the ground on top of itself – but has lovely fine fibre and is still useable.
The last third will be rippled in the field and then tank retted.
